The sponsor licence system has been in place for nearly four years, which is the current life cycle of a sponsor licence. As such, those organisations that registered to be sponsors in the early days of the scheme will soon be required to renew their licence should they intend to continue to employ migrants under either Tier 2 or Tier 5 of the Points Based System.

This was a decrease from 195,130 in 2010, but higher than a five year average of 162,704 from 2005-2009. Approvals of British citizenship applications have increased substantially since 2000, with annual averages of 114,284 from 2000-2004.

A UK Border Agency Report has shown that the long queues at Heathrow airport were caused by organisational changes and a lack of planning, with too few staff at peak times at passport control at Terminal 3. According to the Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration, John Vine, border staff were hampered in their ability “to maintain effective and efficient controls".

Immigration officers and passport office staff are expected to stage walkouts on 10th May after the Public & Commercial Services union (PCS) called for industrial action over public sector pension reforms. The strike is scheduled to take place one day after the Queen's Speech, in which the government's legislative ambitions are set out, and which is expected to include a bill enshrining pension changes in law.

The Migration Review 2011/2012 predicts that net migration will fall to 180,000 in 2012, from its record high of 252,000 in 2010, but will not continue to fall at that rate.
