Biometric Residence Permit Requirement Increased

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has announced that it has completed the rollout of biometric residence permits (BRPs) to new applicants applying to stay in the UK for more than six months. This includes refugees and those granted settlement.

All applicants in those categories will now be required to register their fingerprints and digital face image when applying. If their application is successful they will be issued with a BRP, which will provide evidence of their immigration status and entitlements in the UK.

Applicants will be able to provide the necessary biometric information through selected branches of the Post Office. By 10th April 2012, the service should be available at 104 locations across the UK.

BRPs make it easier for employers to verify a foreign national's right to work in the UK.  Employers can access guidance about using them on the UKBA’s website:

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/business-sponsors/preventing-illegal-working/checking-brp/

From 31 May 2012, the UKBA will be launching an automated online checking service and, ultimately, chip checking services
