PM Talks Tough On Migrants And Benefits

Prime Minister David Cameron has said that EEA nationals in the UK will no longer be able to retain their status as a jobseeker and continue to claim benefits for more than six months, unless they can prove they are “genuinely seeking employment”. The move is among measures to ensure people come to the UK "for the right reasons" after it had become what the Prime Minister described as a "soft touch" under the previous Labour government.

UK Home Office Olympics Planning

With less than a fortnight to go until the start of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Home Office has detailed on its website the Border Force’s preparations for the forthcoming busy summer, as it begins to implement its ‘well-rehearsed plans’ following a period of planning that began almost two years ago.

These plans involve the deployment of 16 mobile teams to meet demand, based on airline passenger number predictions and arrivals schedules. Furthermore, the Border Force has opened a Command Suite at Heathrow, which allows desks to be monitored and staff to be moved at the airport’s terminals to deal with growing passenger numbers.

Speaking before the Home Affairs Committee last week, Immigration Minister Damian Green said that Heathrow would be in “full Olympics mode” from Sunday 15th July. Mr Green stated that “the idea that there are endless long queues day after day would be misleading now” adding that a wait of “forty five minutes is acceptable”.

During the Olympic period, the Border Force will:

deploy up to 500 additional staff across the country, to include enough staff at Heathrow to cover every desk during busy times;

collaborate closely with BAA and other port operators to model arrival processing times during the Games. Plans will be

monitored and updated as airlines begin to confirm passenger numbers and arrival times;

collect biometric details (picture and fingerprint) in advance for Games Family Members - visitors who have been accredited for the 2012 Olympic or Paralympic Games by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), including athletes, coaches, umpires, technical and support staff, and broadcasters. 15,000 biometrics have already been collected;

provide dedicated arrival lanes for Games Family Members arriving at Heathrow;

roster staff to match peak periods and use a contingency force from across government.

A Border Force spokesperson said: “We will not compromise border security but are working with airlines to keep delays to a minimum, particularly ahead of the busy Olympic period.”
