Possible U Turn On Foreign Students

It is currently being speculated in the national press that the Prime Minister David Cameron is concerned that visa restrictions will stem the flow of affluent foreign students studying in British Universities.

If foreign students were to be removed from the net migration figures it would help the Government reach its pledged target to cut the immigration total to below 100,000 by the next general election in 2015.

However, only last month, Immigration Minister Damian Green dismissed the idea of removing students from the restrictions, concerned that it would be seen as “fiddling” the figures.

The change in view is alleged to be linked to the Home Office claim that the cap on students is costing the economy £2.6billion.

One Downing Street source said: “The Prime Minister understands these arguments and is definitely considering a change of policy.” There are no plans for any immediate announcement, however.
